What's the Armoire actually for, and why do people ignore it?

It has no slot limit, but only accepts specific gear. Patch 7.5 significantly expanded what qualifies: far more job gear, plus dungeon gear from patch 7.0 onward. Check for the lit icon in the item's corner to confirm it qualifies.

Armory Chest or Glamour Dresser for my old gear?

Accepted Answer

Armory Chest is for gear you might actually re-equip. The Glamour Dresser (800 slots) is for cosmetic keepers only, and requires a Glamour Prism per item, full durability, and materia extracted first.

What goes in the Chocobo Saddlebag instead of my main bags?

Accepted Answer

Relic weapon materials, dye stacks, tribal and event tokens, and gardening supplies. 70 slots free, 140 with the Companion App subscription.

Question 4

I'm leveling multiple jobs. How do I keep the Armory Chest from running out?

Accepted Answer

Weapons are the bottleneck: every job needs its own, never shared, and there's no way to buy more space unlike retainers. Patch 6.0 bumped Main Hand and Rings to 50 slots each. Crafting and gathering armor is usually shared across all 8 Disciples of the Hand.

How many retainers do I actually need, and what should each one do?

Accepted Answer

You start with 2 free retainers, with up to 7 more available as a real-money subscription, not a gil cost. Each holds 175 slots. A common split: crafting materials by class, finished goods for sale, materia and collectibles, and glamour by role.

Can I use an alt character as extra storage?

Accepted Answer

Yes, parking mid-level materials on an alt to keep the main character's bags clear is a real, low-effort pattern.

Question 7

My crafting mat tab is a disaster. What's safe to vendor or discard?

Accepted Answer

If a material is buyable from any NPC vendor, or not clearing more than about 10 gil on the marketboard, it's not worth a slot. High-level gatherers can regather most raw materials on demand instead of hoarding them.

Question 8

What do meld, spiritbond, and overmeld actually mean?

Accepted Answer

Melding attaches materia to an empty slot on gear for a stat bonus. Overmelding adds materia beyond those slots with a real chance to fail and destroy the materia. Spiritbond builds up as you use a piece of gear and, at 100%, lets you extract its materia without destroying the item, non-destructive since patch 5.2.

Question 9

Which materia is safe to sell or discard?

Accepted Answer

Keep the current top grade and the grade just below it for overmelding. Materia from any expansion before the current one retrieves at a guaranteed 100% success rate, and once you've outleveled the gear it's on, it's safe to clear out.

Question 10

Triple Triad cards, fireworks, orchestrion rolls. Worth keeping?

Accepted Answer

Triple Triad cards have no marketboard value, only sellable to an NPC for MGP. Unused fireworks and duplicate orchestrion rolls are safe clutter to clear.

Question 11

Is desynthesis worth doing, and do I need a high skill level first?

Accepted Answer

No level requirement worries as of patch 5.2: skill level no longer affects success chance, only reward quality. Eight crafting classes can desynthesize, unlocked at level 30, turning unwanted gear into real crafting materials instead of a vendor pittance.

Is there a better place to sell junk gear than a vendor? (The Doman Enclave)

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Donation Basket at the Doman Enclave's Shazenkai in Kugane, which pays a multiple of normal vendor sell price, from 120% up to 200% as your own cumulative donations hit milestones, up to a weekly gil cap (20,000 rising to 25,000, 30,000, then 40,000 at higher donation totals) that resets every Tuesday.

Should I turn old gear in to my Grand Company for seals instead?

Accepted Answer

Sometimes, if you actually want seals: at Sergeant Second Class rank or higher, the Personnel Officer trades pink, green, or blue rarity gear (not current endgame loot) for seals scaled to item level. There is no undo on this turn-in, and seals cap between 10,000 and 90,000 depending on Grand Company rank.

Can I just discard quest reward items once I'm done?

Accepted Answer

Almost always yes. Most quest-related items can be repurchased later from the Calamity Salvager in Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, or Ul'dah.

Question 15

What about tomestones, scrips, and event currencies piling up?

Accepted Answer

Several currencies have a hard cap or rotate out entirely on a patch cycle, silently converting or vanishing if you don't spend them down first. Check the Currency window now and then and spend anything near its cap on something you'd actually use.
